The details of the predictions of this chapter are believed to have come to pass between the time of Daniel and the birth of Jesus. For example, v.2 announces the rule of four Persian kings. The fourth was said to be richer than others. The combination of power and riches usually amount to abysmal arrogance and power intoxication.
Vs.3-4 records the rise and fall of Alexander. In v.4, we see the four-fold division of the kingdom. V.6 records the eventual alliance of those two kingdoms and vs.8-9 the Egyptian plunder of Syria and the unsuccessful retaliation of Syria.
Battles and wars, jealousy and selfishness, politics and alliances, such has been the pattern of human history. V.17, for example, shows some of the things that happen when negotiations take place at high levels. Fortunately, human affairs are ultimately controlled by God and not by the “powerful” figures who take part in round table conferences.
All such plans, as we find in this passage, are bound to come to nothing unless the Lord approves of it (vs.17-19). May our leaders learn to depend, not on their manoeuvrings, but on the Lord.
